Tweed Shire Council gets its first Green mayor

GREENS Cr Katie Milne is the new mayor of Tweed Shire Council after her name was drawn by lot over veteran conservative Cr Warren Polglase.

She was nominated by Cr Gary Bagnall and Cr Barry Longland in what was believed to be a compromise when Cr Longland indicated he would not support former Mayor Bagnall.

Cr Warren Polglase was nominated by Cr Carolyn Byrne and Cr Phil Youngblutt.

Votes were split evenly for both nominees triggering a decision by a luck of the draw.

As Cr Milne's name was pulled out of a bucket, the public gallery erupted in applause.

The annual election continued in a similar fashion for the deputy mayor.

Cr Bagnall was chosen by lot over former deputy mayor Phil Youngblutt after they tied three-all.

Mayor Milne told the media it was a "just" result as progressives were the majority on the council.

She said she was "honoured" to be the first Greens mayor of the council.

"I'll do my utmost for the community, I'm always open to any questions or any forms, the door is open to everyone and I hope I do my best.

"Gary and I are both fully aware of the importance of sustainable development and I'm sure he and I will be great running mates and I'm really looking forward to his support.

"It's an exciting time and I hope we can get some really great things achieved.

"I hope that there's a healing across the whole shire, I intend to be a concilitiary mayor."
