GRANDMOTHERS on the northside are showing no signs of slowing down - they are picking up their boxing gloves and packing a punch in Fitzgibbon.

A group of about 15 women at Golden Downs Lifestyle Resort takes fitness classes each week to keep their minds and bodies active.

Fitness teacher Pam Verney said she had been running the classes for several years.

"It's just a fitness class but they love boxing and the sound (of the glove hitting the pad) - smack,” she said.

"They're all seeing improvements in balance, coordination and we do a lot of falls prevention.

"These ladies do aqua aerobics in the summer time.”

The participants get to do boxing when they borrow gloves and pads from Recharged Personal Training.

Great-grandmother Elise Griffin enjoys the classes but is not ready to step into the boxing ring any time soon.

"We've been doing it for awhile with Pam, combining it with aerobics,” she said.

"I have grandkids who go in karate championships and have belts.

"I'm going to play bowls after this.”
