Murphy just happy he’s in the saddle

MICHAEL Murphy's winning Doomben double was a world away from the trauma he endured while he spent six months in a wheelchair at the beginning of his career.

Murphy, who still has 18 months to run on his apprenticeship, teamed with talented duo Hang and Niccanova for one of his best days in the saddle on Saturday.

Apprentices are having a bit of a golden run in Brisbane. After riding seven of the 11 winners last week, Murphy and Taylor Marshall, who landed a treble on Suggan Buggan, Live Fast and Givus A Cuddle, snared five of the nine on Saturday.

At the beginning of Murphy's apprenticeship, a morning accident almost ended his riding career before it even began.

"When I was riding trackwork a horse flipped over on top of me and split my pelvis," he said. "I was in a wheelchair for six months, but I always had intentions of at least trying to make my way back to riding.

"It probably affects my riding style a bit. I can't get down that low on them sometimes."

Murphy is now indentured to Lindsay Gough at Eagle Farm.

"I've been with him about four months. He's a good boss," Murphy said.

"He's like a father to me, we're pretty close."

Murphy chose a career in the saddle after originally starting out on the rodeo circuit.

"I used to do a bit of bull riding. That was good fun, but it wasn't enough and I decided to become a jockey," he said.
