Man's miracle weight gain formula: Staying off drugs

IT IS a weight-gain achievement bodybuilders and method actors would envy.

A court has heard Timothy Aart Konings gained 25kg in 10 months, thanks to staying off drugs.

The young father was in custody all that time, on charges including ice and marijuana possession, but was released on parole this week.

The Gatton 26-year-old now planned to move to a different town, away from nefarious drug influences, Brisbane Supreme Court heard on Monday.

A healthy-looking Konings pleaded guilty to a profusion of drug and drug-related offences, including receiving tainted property.

His defence barrister said the young man had started improving himself.

Defence counsel Steve Kissick said Konings had earned a position of trust in jail, working in the cafeteria.

Mr Kissick the 25kG gain - about one kilo every 12 days on average - showed the depth of the Gatton man's former drug problem.

It was also a sure sign Konings had been keeping off drugs, Mr Kissick said.

Mr Kissick said his client had completed a hospitality certificate while in custody.

And he said Konings also managed to get work in the prison cafeteria, which showed authorities deemed him worthy of trust.

The Crown did not push for Konings to stay locked up but said he had a lamentable criminal history.

In 2014 Konings was charged with offences including receiving tainted property.

He also faced a wilful damage charge after flooding a cell at Gatton Police Station.

Prosecutor CE Thompson said Konings "continues to thumb his nose" at chances the courts give him.

"He continuously lied to police about the items found in his possession," Ms Thompson added.

But early guilty pleas counted in his favour.

Justice Soraya Ryan gave Konings two years' jail with an immediate release on parole. -NewsRegional
