YOUNG readers were treated like stars recently at special reward ceremonies held in Council libraries.

Hundreds of families enrolled in the Gold Star and Little Stars reading program offered at Bracken Ridge, Sandgate and Zillmere libraries.

Since the program began in 2004, around 65,000 children have registered for the programs citywide; this year more than 9000 children participated.

Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy said, "The program works because it involves children in recreational reading, provides rewards and incentives for persisting with the program, and because it involves children in activities based around reading.

"Reading can open up new worlds for children, and the program is designed to assist children in discovering their own reading interests.

"These programs, along with regular story time and our First 5 Forever program are delivering great results in boosting early literacy among children - and encouraging parents to read with their children.

"It was great to see so many families at the reward ceremonies, with parents, grandparents and other siblings all coming together to celebrate reading.”

Children attending the ceremonies received a certificate, medallion, cake and juice.
