SANDGATE Fire and Rescue Station will have a new community purpose when firefighters vacate the building for new premises in Bracken Ridge in 2020.

Member for Sandgate Stirling Hinchliffe said the brick building in Brighton Road, which opened on August 28, 1970, would remain as a community asset, with a closed tender process (tender by invitation) to determine its new tenant.

"I pushed for and got a commitment from the Minister and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to not sell the current site to the highest bidder,” he said.

"The Sandgate station has served the community for many years and will remain a community asset.”

Mr Hinchliffe said the final details of the tender process hadn't been determined.

"The first stage is a consultation with interested groups,” he said.

"What I want to hear is what their interest in the building is, and what criteria should be part of the process.

"I'd also like to hear from members of the public on what should and shouldn't be permitted in the building.

"The building will be granted by government to the community organisation so it needs to be an organisation with the ability to take on property and maintain it for years to come.

"Any refurbishment of the Sandgate station would be the responsibility of the successful tender organisation.”

Mr Hinchliffe said he was hopeful the tender process would start this financial year.

He said while he was excited about the development of the new station in Bracken Ridge, "the cherry on the top is that the station that's been here (in Sandgate) for nearly 50 years will continue to serve the community in some form. I will work with the community to get the right outcome.”
