Farleigh sugar mill crushes its record

FARLEIGH sugar mill set a 2015 record this week.

It crushed more than 78,000 tonnes of sugar cane, making it the best week of this year's crush so far.

Despite stops for maintenance at Mackay Sugar's two other mills in the area, 240,148 tonnes were crushed by the company.

Racecourse crushed 71,360 tonnes and the largest mill, Marian, crushed 90,059 tonnes of sugar cane.

A spokeswoman said PRS was up slightly on other weeks at 15.40.

With the company expecting to crush a slightly smaller amount this year of 4.86 million tonnes, it predicted the season would finish in November.

Mackay's other milling company Wilmar said a cane train derailment on Thursday meant four harvesting groups couldn't supply cane for about three days.

"This had some impact on mill throughput," she said.

"A factory cleaning intermission originally planned for this week was brought forward to Friday to minimise the impact of the derailment."

Despite the interruption, Wilmar said it was still on track to finish the crush in early November.

Plane Creek Mill averaged a weekly throughput of more than 70,000 tonnes of cane for the past seven weeks.

At 8am yesterday, the mill had crushed almost 800,000 tonnes of cane for the season.

That puts it at 60% through the 2015 crush and an expected finish to the season early in November.
