CHRIS Chaplin remembers when he was 13 at Sandgate Golf Club playing his first game and now he wants the next generation to step onto the course.
The Sandgate resident is the new Golf Professional at the club and hopes to get more juniors to join up.
"I grew up in this area and played all my golf in Redcliffe and Sandgate,” he said.
"The very first time I played was at Sandgate Golf Club with my father.
"It was a Saturday afternoon, I was 13 and I parred on the second hole, then I petered out really quick.
"Even though I've been overseas (since then) I've always drifted back to Sandgate.
"My main role here is the coaching and development of our junior program and to provide a fitting service for the members of the public.”
This is not the first time Mr Chaplin has been a club professional.
He was in that role at the Royal Hobart Golf Club and Kelab Golf Sarawak in Malaysia, and head teaching professional at Nudgee Golf Club, Keperra Golf Club and Royal Queensland Golf Club.
The golf professional did his PGA traineeship with Charlie Earp, has coached Scott Hend for the US PGA tour, as well as worked with Ryan Haller, Trudy Jeffery, Chris Gibson, Matt Ferguson, Matt Goggin, Gavin Flint, Tiger Lee, Martin Liu, Boni Kim and Fumio Matsumoto at times in their careers.
Mr Chaplin said it was his turn to train Sandgate's youngest golfers from seven years up to 18.
"During the school term we will run programs and events,” he said.
"Our ultimate goal is to build the numbers so we can have a formal junior competition.
"I will teach the fundamentals of the long and short game.
"The fees are really cheap here so it's a good club to get started at.”
The first program will start on Wednesday, August 9 to September 13 and sessions will be held with Mr Chaplin at Sandgate Golf Club and the Carseldine Big Easy range.
